Low Deep: Unsung

Low Deep: Unsung
Grime's most recognizable producer releases his debut album.
Producers are responsible for rappers' success more than most people realize. In America, only a small percentage of producers are household names. British producer Low Deep is relatively unknown in the States, so the chances of this album making it to our shores are slim but that's what we have the internet for.
Low Deep made his American debut with the opening track on Run the Road Vol 2. His track "Get Set" featured the rapping talent of Big Seac, Demon, Doctor, Ghetto, and Kano, but the production was the true star. The track sounded like Low Deep had hijacked a symphony orchestra to do his bidding. The track could easily hook any listener to the grime genre.
On Low Deep's debut album, he never quite re-creates the exuberance of "Get Set" but he comes pretty damn close.
The album's opening track "Life We're Living" features Big Seac, Demon, and Ghetto. The track features strings with epic electric guitar laid over it. The track is up tempo and certainly a show stopper.
Low Deep seems to produce two types of tunes. The epic up-tempo tracks and then he produces r&b based tracks. The r&b tracks are a little more of an acquired taste. The appeal of grime is the energy and the r&b tracks are much more subdued. The r&b tracks almost seem more Americanized and far from the grime we've come to know from artists like Wiley, Kano, and Dizzee Rascal.
Unsung could be seen as a continuation of the now defunct Run the Road comps. Unsung features the talent of Big Seac, Demon, Ghetto, Doctor, Asher D, No.Lay, Joci, and a myriad of others. In the end, Unsung is a great showcase not only for Low Deep's production which is amongst the most recognizable in grime, but it is also a great showcase for the grime genre.
Rating: 7.4/10
