Kings of Leon: Only By The Night

Kings of Leon: Only By The Night
The fourth album by Kings of Leon has had as much buzz as any new release this year. But as any faithful reader of StGA knows, I agree with the blogosphere about Destroyer and Girl Talk and that's about it.
Kings of Leon is pretty much the same. First off I really can't stand the lead singer's voice. But secondly, their song writing has never struck me as "good".
Only By the Night is finally seeing Kings of Leon get knocked off their throne. Scathing reviews have been piling in from Pitchfork Media, PopMatters, and Rolling Stones. What has changed between their previous critically acclaimed releases and Only By The Night?
Kings of Leon once charming southern rock has morphed into 90s alternative. They now sound like a whiny teenager covering 90s hit "Cumbersome" by Seven Mary Three. I suppose you could also compare them to Fuel or Creed. That is what this album sounds like. The only song that gives you an inkling of why this band was so celebrated is the album's first single "Sex on Fire". "Sex on Fire" is an actual fun song in a sea of pseudo-angst.
I know this review sounds mean, but I came into this album with no expectations. I was waiting for the album to either wow me or disappoint me. Instead, the album just confused me as to why people have seemed so in love with this band.

I don't think 3 stars counts as "scathing".

You are the sad proof of why America's public school systems are failing us...

Thrown = past participle of the verb "to throw"
Throne = a large, decorated chair

Go back to fourth grade. While you're there, pick up "Aha Shake Heartbreak" and then try making absurd and unfounded comparisons to Creed.

You cop to hating the lead singers voice yet you were open to being "wowed" by the new album?

Right on. You said it, man, and P4k and PopMatters agree. They blow ass and anyone who likes them is a cock worshipper. Go buy some Nickelback albums, you morons. Only pussies post anonymously.

I just don't agree with this review. It almost sounds as though you haven't listened to it properly and don't know anything about them. You've gone into it with a closed mind. And come out not enjoying it. It's full of amazing tracks, and just because they don't sound how you would expect the biggest rock band's songs to sound like, doesn't mean they're not immense.
8.5/10

Nice work Thomas. I got your back on this. This review stinks and I'm baffled as to why this album is getting bad reviews. This however isn't a review, more of a series of contradictions, poor writing and un-researched bias.
Only by the Night opens beautifully and lays it on thick for the majority of the album. It ain't perfect, but your comparisons are ridiculous. This is a welcome addition to the catalogue and exactly what The Kings are all about. It IS their sound, it IS their work.
8.5/10 sounds like a good score to me too.
