Ra Ra Riot: The Rhumb Line

Ra Ra Riot: The Rhumb Line
The debut album for Syracuse, NY's Ra Ra Riot attempts to extend their hype into a tangible full-length release.
The band is less than two years old yet they've already gained an incredible amount of attention due to their energetic live show and unique instrumentation. The band employs a full-time cellist and violinist.
Their chamber pop output matches jubilant rhythms with haunting strings. The band reminds me of Vampire Weekend mixed with new "Viva La Vida" Coldplay. Their orchestral dance music isn't necessarily unique but it is ear catching.
First listen through, I didn't find many highlights. The album clearly had some songs that were catchier than others but the entire album seemed to be painted with the same grey brush strokes. A second listen really brought out some of the better qualities of the band and showed me what makes them popular. "Dying Is Fine", the album's first single, clearly is the standout track but "Too Too Too Fast" with it's female chorus vocals brings something new to the pot too.
In the end, I can't get fully behind the album. The band's hype clearly outweighs its ability to produce. The music is good, but its nothing great.
Rating: 6.3/10

Good review. I agree with hearing the slight Vampire-y Weekend tones, but not much, because I am not a fan of the VW, but I really dig RRR. I've only been listening for about 2 weeks, but my affection for the album grows exponentially with each listen. Additionally, seeing them live (as with any awesome band) increased my love. They rocked so so so so good; the energy was amazing, the members were sharp, the sound was crisp.
