Styles P: Super Gangster (Extraordinary Gentleman)

iconStyles P: Super Gangster (Extraordinary Gentleman)
Styles P releases his third studio album, the follow up to last years Time is Money. The Lox/D-Block member described Super Gangster as "street, dark Hip Hop".
The first single from the album is "Blow Ya Mind". Produced by Swizz Beatz, it has all the signature elements of a Swizz Beatz hit record.
Besides that track, the album is completely unaccessible to a mainstream audience. P makes it obvious that its not just an album title, he is Super Gangster. He seems much more concerned with his hood image than with making good music.
Normally when a hip hop artist chooses not to go the mainstream route, I have no problem with that. But P makes "Blow Ya Mind" which is as mainstream as it gets, but the track sticks out like a sore thumb in the context of the album.
Does Stlye P succeed with the album? His lyricism is good, the beats are mediocre at best, and thematically nothing stands out as surprising. If you're a long time P fan, then this album maybe a good look but if you're getting the album on the strength of the lead single you're in for a disappointment.
Rating: 2.8/10
